IN MEMORIAM
ROBERT YOUNG, HILLMOUNT
OBIT JANUARY, 1872
Let him rest on; his earthly cares are ended,
His griefs and troubles all are finished now,
From this sad world he has at length ascended
To where no sorrow clouds the anxious brow.
Let him rest on; his be the peace and gladness,
And ours the toiling and the ceaseless strife;
Let him enjoy, freed from all gloom and sadness,
The well-earned guerdon of a faultless life.
For he deserves it who in every season
Life’s great corruptions like a man withstood;
Well he deserves it, if our human reason
Can judge betwixt the evil and the good.
Endowed with wealth, yet not of wealth abusive,
But ever ready at the orphan’s call;
So humble, gentle, meek and unintrusive,
A friend, nay more, a brother to us all.
We all shall miss him; we shall miss full often
Along the highway, and around the board,
His pleasant smile that every heart could soften,
His friendly hand-grasp, and his cheering word.
He was a man; and many a drear to-morrow
May come and go nor bring us such an one;
And Ballymena well may mourn with sorrow,
Her greatest merchant, and her noblest son.
