TO MISS CUNINGHAM OF ARDVERNIS

On the hearing of her further benefactions to the congregation of Cullybackey,
February 25th 1906

“Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.” Proverbs 31v29
Lady of high repute and generous heart,
Thy deeds have won thee everlasting fame,
Embossed on glass and carved in during stone;
The long hereafter shall adore thy name.

Endowed with gifts above the common lot,
A queen thou reignest along the sparkling Maine
Where Cullybackey’s graceful spire lifts
High to the clouds its gilded weather-vane.

No symbol this of thine unswerving love,
Who scatt’rest largess with unsparing hand,
Thy gracious life well spent in noble acts,
Thy hope firm anchored in the Better Land.

Happy the church which thou hast lived to bless!
Happy the people worshipping therein!
There no financial cares can dull the sword,
Or damp the spirit, in the fight with sin.

Long may thy life, Great Gift of God, be spared,
Thy pure example beckon others on,
A throne be thine in grateful human hearts,
A rich reward await when life is done.

Then in the Church all glorious, at the last,
The Church Triumphant, thou shalt find a place,
And, in the Light that rushes from the throne,
Shalt see thy Lord and Master face to face.
